modiin-umm-al-umdanChanukah involved a battle between the massive Greek army and a band of Jewish soldiers, who emerged victorious against all odds. The war between the Maccabees and the Greeks began near Emaus, located near Latrun and the Ayalon Valley. In addition to being the site of a major battle during the time of Joshua, Latrun and its environs was also the site of fierce battles in the War of Independence in 1948 and the Six-Day War in 1967. Why was this area so contested in so many battles throughout history? In answering that question, students will gain a greater appreciation of the significance of Chanukah, and a greater understanding of how the history and values of Chanukah shed light on the development of the State of Israel
