Israel is the only country that began the 21st century with more trees than it had at the beginning of the 20th century. In this course, students explore modern environmental technologies developed in Israel, and the Biblical origins of environmental protection.
The course can be modified for upper elementary, middle school, high school, and adult learners.
Note: This course can be taken as a 1 or 2 session program.
The tension between technological advancement and environmental protection is already addressed in the Biblical account of creation. This course explores that tension and man’s role in protecting the environment. It examines how the ideal of environmental protection is uniquely reflected in a number of Jewish laws relating to agriculture, warfare, and Sabbath observance. Students will also discover how this ideal has been advanced in modern times in Israel through the development of technologies for water conservation, desalination, forestation, and the development of clean energy sources.
